Report of the Working Group on Efficiency Measures in the Criminal Justice System - Circuit and District Courts 2013-2014
On 11 December, the Report of the Working Group on Efficiency Measures in the Criminal Justice System was published. The report outlines the developments and measures adopted across the criminal justice system in the period 2013 -2014. The report is focused on initiatives directed at delivering greater efficiencies and cost reductions at District and Circuit Court level where the relevant Justice agencies interact. Read more
- International Protection Bill 2015
On Thursday, 10th of December, Minister Fitzgerald opened the Second stage debate in the Dáil on the International Protection Bill 2015. The principal purpose of the International Protection Bill is to reform the system for determining applications for international protection in Ireland through the introduction of a single applications procedure. - Irish Refugee Protection Programme
The third meeting of the Irish Refugee Protection Programme Taskforce took place on Thursday 10 December and was chaired by Minister Fitzgerald and by Minister of State O'Riordáin. Among the topics discussed at the meeting were general migration matters including an update on the general migrant situation in Europe, an update on an information request received from the European Asylum Support Office, an update on the establishment of EROCs as well as other accommodation matters and timescales for the resettlement and relocation of persons to Ireland. In addition, the meeting also heard from the Irish Red Cross in relation to public offers of support and from the UNHCR.
- Criminal Justice (Burglary of Dwellings) Bill 2015 - Second Stage
On Friday, 11 December, Minister Aodhán Ó Ríordáin delivered the Seanad second stage speech on the Criminal Justice (Burglary of Dwellings) Bill 2015. This Bill aims to tackle persistent offenders charged with multiple offences of burglary of homes. It will enhance the provisions for refusal of bail in appropriate cases and provide for consecutive sentencing for repeat offenders. Read more
- Prisons Bill 2015
On Monday, 7 December, Minister of State Ann Phelan on behalf Minister Fitzgerald delivered the second stage speech on the Prisons Bill 2015 concerning the facilitation of the complete closing of St Patrick’s Institution. The Bill will repeal statutory provisions that enable the courts to order the detention of offenders under the age of 21 in St Patrick’s Institution and will also delete references to St Patrick’s Institution from the statute book.
