The Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan TD, has today announced funding supports for victims of crime in 2019. 57 organisations around the country will be supported next year through an annual funding allocation of €1.712m.
Minister Flanagan said:
"The ongoing direct help being provided to victims of crime and to their families and friends by our victim support services makes a hugely valuable and vital contribution in Irish society. I warmly applaud all of the staff and volunteers in these services for their dedicated, professional and sensitive work in helping so many of our people during what is invariably a distressing and very often traumatic time in their lives.
"I am, therefore, very pleased to be able to provide funding of €1.712m in 2019 to fund services to victims of crime through the scheme administered by the Victims of Crime Office in my department. This allocation will be distributed to a large number of non-governmental organisations across the State in providing a wide range of supports to victims of crime.”
This funding is being provided alongside a programme of wider reform which the government continues to advance in supporting victims of crime. Such reform includes the embedding of a better system-wide response for supporting victims across the criminal justice sector. The recent introduction of important victim oriented legislation such as the Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) Act 2017 and the Domestic Violence Act 2018 is also strengthening the legislative framework in this area.
The Minister added:
"The funding being provided in 2019 remains a key feature of our overall efforts in better supporting victims of crime at their time of need and so I am delighted to be able to announce this important allocation today."

Funding for organisations
In 2017, the latest year for which complete figures are available, €1.712m was provided by the department to 58 organisations supporting victims of crime. With this funding, these services - through the work of 584 volunteers in association with full time staff - supported approximately 18,500 victims of crime by way of over 62,000 contacts made during 2017.
Support was provided to victims of general crime but also to victims of specific categories of crime such as victims of domestic abuse, victims of sexual violence, tourist victims of crime, child victims and also supports provided to family members of victims of homicide.
Supports provided included the provision of practical information, emotional support, court accompaniment, accompaniment to Garda interviews, accompaniment to sexual assault treatment units, counselling and referral to other services.
Funding for domestic and sexual violence services is primarily a matter for Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, under the aegis of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs.
